Soft drinks are extremely popular around the world, but regular consumption can lead to many health problems.
The high sugar and chemical content of soda carries risks that go beyond the simple concept of “empty” calories – from weight gain to bone damage.
Here are some of the harmful effects these drinks have on the body.
Help with weight gain
Carbonated drinks are a major source of added sugars and contain virtually no nutrients. The liquid sugars they contain bypass the body’s natural satiety mechanisms, leading to excessive calorie consumption.
Studies show that people who drink sugary drinks daily are more likely to gain weight and develop obesity than those who avoid them.
Impact on bone health
One common concern with carbonated drinks is the risk of bone fragility. Although phosphoric acid is thought to interfere with calcium metabolism, a direct link has not been proven. The real problem is substitution: people often drink carbonated drinks instead of calcium-rich beverages (e.g., milk), resulting in reduced calcium intake.
Adequate calcium intake can neutralize the negative effects of caffeine and maintain healthy bones for a long time.
Carbonated waters without added sugar, phosphoric acid and caffeine (e.g. carbonated mineral water) are not considered harmful to bone health.
Blood sugar levels and diabetes risk
Sugary sodas cause spikes in blood sugar levels and, over time, increase insulin resistance. Just one can of soda a day is linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. According to one study, every additional 150 calories of “sugar” consumed per day increases the risk of diabetes by 1.1%.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
Fructose, the main ingredient in carbonated drinks, is metabolized by the liver. Excessive fructose consumption can lead to fat accumulation and the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition that can cause serious complications, so it’s important to limit your intake of sugary drinks.
Tooth damage
The combination of acids and sugars in carbonated drinks creates an environment conducive to the destruction of tooth enamel. Phosphoric and carbonic acids attack enamel, while sugars provide a breeding ground for bacteria, which produce even more acids. Regular consumption significantly increases the risk of tooth decay and infection.
