The room fell silent, and I met my aunt’s gaze. “You didn’t lose a sister when my mother died. You lost control.”
A cousin at the other end of the table let out a small, astonished laugh. “Sammie… What have you done?”
The lawyer cleared his throat. “For the record, Michael kept the correspondence relating to an attempt at child custody.”
“Sammie… What have you done?”
“Clover, what are you—”
“I know about the letters and the threats. And the lawyers. You tried to take away the only parent I had left.”
” But… “
“Michael owed me nothing,” I continued. “But he gave me everything . He wasn’t given the right to be my father—he earned it. I don’t understand why you’re here. Did you think my father would have left you something ? He left the truth.”
Aunt Sammie looked away.

That evening, I opened the box labeled “Clover Art Projects” and took out the bracelet I had made in second grade. The string was frayed, the glue brittle, but the yellow paint stains still clung to the edges.
I ran my finger over the beads, remembering Michael’s pride when I gave it to him. He had worn it all day, even to go to the grocery store , acting as if it were made of real gold.
I slipped it onto my wrist. It barely fit, the elastic digging slightly into my skin.
“It’s still holding,” I whispered.
That evening, I opened the box labeled “Clover’s Art Projects”
At the bottom of the box, under a papier-mâché volcano, was an old Polaroid. It was me, missing a front tooth, sitting on his lap. He was wearing that ridiculous flannel shirt I always stole when I was sick.
The same one that’s always hanging on the back of her bedroom door.
I grabbed it and put it on, then I went out onto the porch.
The night air was cool. I sat on the steps, my arms wrapped around my knees, the bracelet pressed tightly against my wrist.
I took out my phone and Frank’s business card.

The screen went black and I looked up.

I sat there for a long time, clutching the Polaroid until my thumb warmed the corner. Then I went back inside and placed Michael’s letter on the kitchen table as if it belonged there.
“You didn’t just raise me,” I whispered. “You chose me. Over everything. And now it’s up to me to choose how the story ends.”

Inside, my bag was packed. Tomorrow, I’ll start the paperwork to have his name reinstated on my birth certificate. I’ve already called the clerk’s office.
