Thirty long minutes passed. Ryan kissed my forehead, said he was getting coffee, and stepped into the hallway.
The moment the door clicked shut, I grabbed my phone.
One new video. Twenty-seven seconds. No caption.
I hit play.
The footage showed a grainy hospital hallway. Ryan paced outside the OR with his phone to his ear. Diana had been close enough for her recording to capture every word.
“I told them not to do the extra intervention on the second one,” Ryan was heard saying. “One baby is enough. I have already signed the form. She’s still under; she’ll never know the difference. I never wanted two, you know that.” Infantcare guide
Five seconds in, my phone slipped from my hands onto the hospital blanket.
“No,” I whispered. “Oh my God…”
I stared toward the door, realizing the man I’d mourned beside had been lying from the second I woke up.
I looked down at Caleb asleep on my chest, and every strange moment from the previous nine months suddenly made sense.
The garage phone calls.
The way Ryan reacted whenever I mentioned Noah.
That strangely emotionless voice during the 911 call.
My husband hadn’t been in shock. Couplecommunication workshop
He’d been carrying out a plan.
A gentle knock sounded, and Diana stepped inside, closing the door behind her.
“You watched it,” she said quietly.
“He signed something, didn’t he?” I asked.
“I saw it myself. It was a refusal for the second emergency procedure. While you were sedated, your husband was listed as your medical proxy.” Diana swallowed. “I’ve replayed that night over and over in my mind. I couldn’t stay silent anymore.”
My hands shook so badly I had to grab the bed rail.
“I want to scream. I want him arrested. I want him gone right now!”
“Eve, listen to me,” Diana said softly. “I’ll testify. I’ll sign a statement today if you want. But I’m only one nurse, and he was your legal proxy. On paper, he had the authority to refuse the intervention. The video shows intent, and my statement explains what I witnessed, but without the signed form itself, any skilled attorney will argue he was simply a grieving husband and that I misremembered what happened.” Relationshipadvice videos
She glanced quickly toward the door.
“That document is the only thing connecting his words to his signature. If he suspects anything, he’ll destroy it before we can reach it. Hospitals protect themselves,” she said.
I shut my eyes. My anger burned, fierce and useless.
“Then I need proof.”
